This is a study canvas I painted using oil paint. Before to start a much larger canvas and final composition, it is always a good idea to make a smaller study painting like this to get familiar with the volumes and see where to make improvements or where to focus more attention.

Oil Painting timelapse Underpainting using ink and Oil - Part 1

In this video timelapse I am sharing my approach to a new large detailed oil painting I'm working on these days. In this PART 1 of the video I documented all the steps I took to create an effective underpainting which allows me to establish close to correct values for different areas of the canvas while keep mantaining all the smallest details visible, which is going to be very useful for the second stage of the process. In order to do that I decided to use a slightly unconventional approach by mixing different tecniques, like using archival ink pens, indian ink wash, raw umber oil layers and lift out.
